One day, a financial professional showed me a CV that started with almost half a page of personal qualities. I asked her what position she wanted and her answer was clear as day. The goal of a CV summary is to get the reader’s attention and to give them a quick overview of your professional identity.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the proper way to write a CV summary?
The purpose of a professional CV summary is to concisely convey your level of experience, specialised expertise, most relevant skills and professional impact. It should be specific to the job you are applying for and not a generic personal introduction.
What is the length of a CV summary?
The length of a CV summary should be brief enough to be scanned quickly, but still convey relevant information about the candidate’s professional background. A short paragraph with several focused lines is more helpful than a long bio taking up a lot of the first page.
Do years of experience need to be included in the summary?
If the number of years is accurate and shows some level of seniority, it can be included in the professional summary. But years are not sufficient; describe the field, scope or expertise gained in that experience.
Do CVs have achievements?
When they are relevant to the position you are applying for and have great value, a CV summary may contain one or two. More detailed evidence can then be included in the work-experience section, where the context and results can then be adequately explained.
Which words are not recommended for a CV summary?
Do not use terms like best in a cv. Do not also use words like exceptional or dynamic or results-driven without supporting evidence. Professional value is more effectively conveyed by concrete knowledge and accomplishments than by self-praise.
